To read or not to read… You choose! You have probably noticed that 2005 was a very special year for Miguel de Cervantes and his Quixote. Yes, my friend, this was the year of the fourth anniversary of the first publication of this book. You can see its many versions, in Spanish and different languages (of course, in Catalan!)… But maybe you are interested in any kind of books and want to improve your Spanish. And perhaps you don´t want to spend a lot of money buying them… Barcelona has an answer: its really good library network. Nearly all neighbourhoods in Barcelona have a public library. The access to them is free, you just have to become a member with some ID and your actual address. You get your personal blue card at the moment that also gives you discounts in some bookshops. With your card you can borrow books, of course, but also videos on DVD. You can have them at home for a whole week, and if you like the classics, you will find many options there, even difficult films that are not found in most video shops. But the possibilities of the libraries don’t stop here: you can have free access to the internet (booking in advance, even by phone) and read any of the week or month magazines and daily papers in some specially designed spaces. And if you want to see exhibitions or take a course (from cooking to yoga, it depends on the library), you can have them round the corner for a few money or in some cases, without paying anything. There are also some specialised libraries, such as the one in Palau Robert (see our Useful addresses section), that is a library about Tourism. You can find all their activities at
